Rollon O-Rail

Rollon O-Rail is a modular, self-aligning linear roller guide system designed for machine construction, where mounting deviations and flexible rail configurations are key considerations. The system is suitable for applications utilizing one or more parallel guide rails, such as those found in handling and automation machinery.

The FXRG guide features three raceways positioned at 90-degree angles to one another. When combined with the corresponding guide rollers, this design offers various options for accommodating loads and achieving smooth, consistent linear motion.

Self-aligning guide for flexible mounting

In machines with multiple parallel rails, deviations in the mounting surfaces or the relative alignment of the rails can generate additional forces. The Rollon O-Rail system offers ways to compensate for these deviations. According to Rollon, an appropriate configuration can accommodate alignment errors of up to ±1 mm in the axial direction and 5 degrees of rotation.

This makes the system an attractive choice for structures where a perfectly precision-machined mounting surface is not always available. For instance, in aluminum frame constructions or welded machine frames. However, the actual degree of compensation depends on the specific configuration chosen and the mounting conditions.

What should you consider when selecting an O-Rail?

When selecting the Rollon O-Rail system, the load, stroke length, and mounting structure serve as the starting point. The position of the center of gravity also requires attention. If a load is applied eccentrically, it generates moments that place additional stress on the guide rollers and rails; therefore, these moments must be taken into account during the dimensioning process.

Furthermore, the spacing between the rails, the number of guide rollers, and the chosen configuration influence the load distribution and the stability of the assembly. While self-alignment capabilities can compensate for mounting inaccuracies, they do not eliminate the need to evaluate the required rigidity and support.

The motion profile also plays a role. High accelerations or frequent changes in direction can generate additional dynamic forces. Therefore, in addition to the static load, consider the speed, acceleration, and cycle time.

The O-Rail features a NOX surface treatment, which, according to Rollon, ensures hardened surfaces and protection against corrosion. Nevertheless, environmental conditions, contamination, and accessibility for maintenance remain important factors to consider during the selection process.
