Rollon X-Rail is a self-aligning linear roller guide system designed for applications where mounting or alignment errors between parallel rails may occur. The system consists of cold-drawn steel C-profile rails and corresponding carriages equipped with rollers. By combining T-rails and U-rails, the guidance system can compensate for deviations in the relative alignment of the rails.
This feature is particularly relevant in machine construction, where mounting two guide rails with precise parallelism can be challenging. The self-aligning design accommodates alignment errors, thereby limiting unwanted forces within the guidance system. The degree of compensation depends on the specific rail and carriage configuration chosen.
Which versions of X-Rail are available?
Several versions are available within this product family. The standard Rollon X-Rail consists of steel rail profiles. For applications where corrosion resistance is important, Rollon offers a stainless steel version known as X-Rail Stainless Steel.
In addition, there is the Rollon-Nox X-Rail. In this version, the rails are treated using the Rollon-Nox hardening process. The most suitable version depends on factors such as the mechanical load, the environment, and the desired service life.
What should you look for when selecting X-Rail?
When selecting Rollon X-Rail, key factors to consider include the load, stroke length, and mounting structure. The position of the center of gravity must also be taken into account. If a load is applied eccentrically, it creates moments on the carriages, which in turn affect the load distribution. Therefore, these moments must be factored into the dimensioning process.
In applications using two parallel rails, the chosen combination of T- and U-profiles determines the system’s ability to compensate for alignment errors. However, self-alignment does not eliminate the need for careful installation; the support, fastening, and alignment of the rails remain critical to the system’s motion performance.
In addition, speed, acceleration, and cycle time play a role. In dynamic applications, extra forces can arise during acceleration and deceleration. Furthermore, factors such as moisture, contamination, and other environmental conditions influence the choice of rail configuration.
Selecting a suitable configuration therefore requires an assessment of load capacity, moments, motion profile, mounting, and the operating environment. This involves not only verifying the theoretical service life but also ensuring that the guidance system meets the requirements for stability and motion characteristics.
